Automatic Derivation of Abstract Semantics From Instruction Set Descriptions

Abstracted semantics of instructions of processor-based architectures are an invaluable asset for several formal verification techniques, such as software model checking and static analysis. In the field of model checking, abstract versions of instructions can help counter the state explosion problem, for instance by replacing explicit values by symbolic representations of sets of values. Similar to this, static analyses often operate on an abstract domain in order to reduce complexity, guarantee termination, or both. Hence, for a given microcontroller, the task at hand is to find such abstractions. Due to the large number of available microcontrollers, some of which are even created for specific applications, it is impracticable to rely on human developers to perform this step. Therefore, we propose a technique that starts from imperative descriptions of instructions, which allows to automate most of the process

The temporal variability of the OH* airglow layer: A study based on Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and mesospheric models

This work investigates the mesospheric OH* airglow layer. Ground-based observations of its Meinel emission are performed by means of Fourier Transform Spectroscopy at the AWIPEV station, Spitsbergen. Gas kinetic ambient temperatures are derived from the recorded spectra and compared with other data sets, indicating a rather persistent negative temperature offset to co-located spaceborne observations. Furthermore, temperature/brightness fluctuations serve as a diagnostic tool for wave driven perturbations of the OH* airglow layer due to its adiabatic/chemical response. Evidence of a vertical coupling with the lower atmospheric fraction is found on some occasions, corroborating current theories on the wave-mean-flow-interaction as the important driver of mesospheric dynamics. Finally, this work performed gas kinetic simulations, revealing the importance of the combined effect of the O and O2 quenching on the temporal modulation of vertical shifts between different OH* Meinel bands

Safety Recommendations for Safety-Critical Design Patterns

The concept of design patterns, which is considered as one of the commonly used techniques in the development of software and hardware systems, is applicable to be used in the design of safety-critical embedded systems. While several safety metrics and assessment methods have been proposed to evaluate safety-critical systems, most of these methods cannot be used for safety-critical design patterns, due to the fact that a design pattern presents a high-level abstract solution to commonly recurring design problem and it is not related to a specific application or to a specific case. This paper proposes a system of safety recommendations for safety-critical design patterns, which can be used in the assessment of design patterns for safety-critical embedded systems to reflect the severity of failure in the target application. The proposed safety recommendations are based on the safety recommendations of the IEC 61508 standard, and contain additional 3 types of recommendations: weakly not recommend, weakly recommended, and moderately recommended
